ATTACK the Word strategy

Attack the Word!

Attack the word is a strategy that can be used in any grade level content area. Content area teachers should check out this resource because it is a wonderful strategy for students to be able to sound out/pronounce words and sometimes even figure out the definition of the word; like with the word linear from the think aloud packet. The word linear has the word line in it, so the students could infer that the word has something to do with a line. Something that I enjoyed in the video was the poster explaining what the students need to be looking for when attacking a word. The poster gives the students a routine to follow when looking at a word.

  1. Hi Kaitlyn! I really like this post. Especially since some of us are now mentoring students it is important to know tactics to teach students how to break down words and help them understand. This teachers’ instruction is extremely clear and direct and the students seem to really understand the concepts. I like how she outlined different parts of words to show the exact parts of the words that she is talking about. It is both visual and verbal.
