My text set is going to focus on a
MGSE6.G.1 of the 6th grade Georgia Standards of Excellence for mathematics.
The Georgia Standards of Excellence for mathematics has 5 domains: ratios and
proportional relationships, the number system, expressions and equations,
geometry, and statistics and probability. My text set will be orientated in the
geometry domain, which is represented by the “G” in the standard’s
abbreviation, MGSE6.G..1. MGSE6.G.1 states, “Find areas of right triangles,
other triangles, quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or
decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the
context of solving real-world and mathematical problems”.
I have not really started looking
for any resources to put into my test set, but an idea that I have is for the
video maybe from School House Rock or something along those lines to talk about
different shapes, different types of triangles, or area. Others ideas would
maybe be a story about area and the its relationship with different shapes from
The Story of Mathematics website from Carlee’s blog. For the audio I was
thinking maybe a podcast, Ted Talk, chant, etc. about about finding the area
using different shapes. I do not really have an idea for what texts I would
want to bring in. I do not have any ideas for the two text sources yet. Something
that I am trying to keep in mind is that when looking for the the texts each of
them need to be interesting and catch the student’s attention, so it will
support the lesson and benefit the student.

Thanks, Kaitlyn. You're off to a good start here. My only suggestion is that when you're looking for texts, you consider texts that may do something other than explain the concepts. In other words, your texts can show why the concepts are interesting or important rather than just explaining them.
